Each year, hundreds of UNK students spread out across the community to give back during this annual day of thanks.
The Big Event, started at Texas A&M University in 1982, is the largest one-day, student-run service project in the country.
At UNK, which has taken part since 2006, students working at dozens of job sites show their appreciation for the community by picking up litter, washing windows, painting, doing yard work and tackling other tasks. The service project benefits nonprofit organizations, churches and individuals in the Kearney area.
The Big event, which is organized by UNK Student Government, is guided by the motto "One Big Day, One Big Thanks" and the core values of promoting service and unity within the community.
Last year, more than 400 students gave back to our community during The Big Event, volunteered at nearly 60 job sites in the Kearney area.
