About the Department

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Nebraska at Kearney offers undergraduate degree programs in Mathematics and Mathematics Education, as well as graduate courses in the Science/Math Education Master of Science in Education degree program. As a mathematics student, you will receive personalized academic and career support. We keep our class sizes small so that students can actively engage in the learning process both during and outside of class. With an undergraduate degree in math, you will be well prepared to enter graduate school or begin a career in your choice of a variety of fields such as Data Analytics, Actuarial Science, Cryptography, Teaching, and more.

For math education students, Nebraska offers the Attracting Excellence to Teaching Program that provides forgivable loans to students who are in high demand areas.

Our online graduate courses support practicing teachers by expanding their understanding of mathematics and mathematics education research. With additional opportunities in clubs, honoraries, and scholarships, UNK is the place for you!

Michael Christen

“As I look back, I have never regretted my decision to attend UNK. As a math major, I knew that I would obtain the knowledge and problem solving skills to be successful in my future business career. Along the way the campus community provided a great support system; however the math department provided another community of its own where students and professors got to know each other very well and ‘face the challenge’ together. With a later addition of a finance minor and my math background, by graduation, I knew that UNK had provided the knowledge, the experience and a great college community to make my degree very meaningful and valuable."

Student Organizations

  • Kappa Mu Epsilon KME is a honor society that promotes interest in mathematics. Students may apply to be a member; qualification for membership is based on coursework and grades. KME students may participate in regional and national conventions, which focus on student presentations on mathematical topics. Our KME chapter has also sponsored speakers on campus.
  • The Math Club The UNK Math Club is for any student, faculty, and staff who are interested in challenging their mind and having fun with math. We meet twice a month to solve interesting problems and participate in activities that involve and/or promote mathematics.
  • Secondary Educators' Club The Secondary Educators’ Club provides support and connections through the College of Education and content areas to any student pursuing a teaching career in secondary education. Membership in this organization is open to any UNK student pursuing a teaching career that will include students in secondary education (primarily grades 6-12).
